The short answer

A slot's RTP isn't measured after the fact, it's designed in from the start. Studios build a math sheet that assigns a payout and a probability to every possible outcome, then run millions of simulated spins to confirm the weighted average lands on the target percentage. Independent labs re-run that simulation before the game ever reaches a casino floor. The number on the info screen is the result of that process, not a guess or a promise (iTech Labs, RNG and RTP certification standards).

What is a math sheet, really?

A math sheet is the studio's blueprint for every reel, every symbol weight, and every payout in the game. It lists each symbol combination that can land, the exact probability of that combination occurring, and the credits it pays. Multiply each payout by its probability, sum every row, and you get the game's theoretical RTP before a single physical player ever spins it.

This is why RTP is described as "theoretical": it's calculated from the design, not observed from play. How do virtual reels turn design into odds?

Modern slots don't map probability directly onto the symbols you see. Instead, each physical reel position corresponds to one or more virtual reel "stops," and a random number generator (RNG) picks a stop, not a symbol. A reel might show 20 symbols on the glass but have 128 virtual stops behind it, with some symbols assigned far more stops than others.

That's the mechanism that lets a jackpot symbol appear rare on the visible reel while being astronomically rarer underneath. Common symbols get many more stops; rare, high-paying symbols get very few. The visible reel strip is a costume; the virtual reel strip underneath is where the actual math lives.

How do studios confirm the math sheet actually hits the target?

They simulate it at scale. Before certification, the studio (or the testing lab) runs the RNG through millions to billions of simulated spins and tracks the running average payout against the theoretical RTP calculated from the math sheet. At small sample sizes the simulated average bounces around; as the sample grows into the millions, it converges tightly on the target number, which is the law of large numbers doing its job.

This simulation step also catches design errors. If a math sheet's coded probabilities don't match its stated ones, even a small mismatch compounds over millions of spins and shows up clearly in the simulated results, well before the game is submitted for certification.

Who checks the studio's own math?

Independent testing labs re-run the verification before any licensed casino can offer the game. Labs such as GLI, iTech Labs, and eCOGRA receive the game's math sheet and source code, run their own large-scale simulations, and compare the measured payout distribution against the studio's claimed RTP and volatility rating. Regulators in licensed markets require this certificate before a title goes live, and the studio can't quietly adjust the odds afterward without re-certifying (iTech Labs, RNG and RTP certification standards).

Because this audit runs against the actual game code, not just a description of it, certification catches the gap between what a studio says a game does and what the code actually does. That gap is rarer than gambling forums assume, but it's precisely the failure mode certification exists to catch.

Can a casino change RTP after a game is certified?

Not on a live, unmodified build. The certificate covers a specific version of the game's code and math sheet. Some providers do ship multiple RTP configurations of the same title (a "96.1% version" and a "94% version," for example), and it's the operator who selects which certified configuration to run, not something that shifts spin to spin or session to session. What can't happen: a casino silently nudging the odds during a session because a player is winning or losing. The certified math sheet is fixed for that build. Any change requires a new build and a new certificate.

Does knowing the build process change how you should play?

Not the math, but it should change what you trust. A published RTP with a named testing lab behind it is a claim you can partially verify: you know a third party ran the simulation independently. A slot with no visible RTP or certification is a claim you can't verify at all, which is itself useful information.
