And the paytables differ a lot. Wizard of Odds' 2008 survey of video keno machines found returns of 84% to 95%, a 5% to 16% house edge. Two practical notes before you crown video keno. First, the survey ranges are wide because individual paytables vary enormously; Wizard of Odds' standing advice is to shop paytables, since two adjacent machines can pay differently for the same catches. How is online keno different?

Online keno is video keno without the cabinet: a server-side RNG draws your 20 numbers the instant you click, at whatever pace you click. There's no shared board and no waiting for the room. Auto-bet features can run games back to back, so the practical pace ceiling is even higher than a machine's.

The headline difference is the paytables operators say they load. Some crypto-casino operators publish RTPs as high as 99% for their keno games. That's a publisher's claim, not an audited figure, and other sites publish other numbers. A claimed 99% return would mean a 1% house edge, an order of magnitude below anything in the land-based surveys. Why can the lowest house edge cost the most per hour?

Because pace multiplies edge. House edge is the price per wager; games per hour is how many times you pay it. Pilarski made exactly this argument in World Casino News (2015): live keno games are called about 15 times an hour, so at $1 a game the most you could lose is about $15 an hour, and that's total exposure, not the expected cost. Look at what the table actually says. The lounge charges a brutal 28 cents per dollar but only deals you 15 dollars' worth of game an hour, so the expected cost is about $4.20. The video machine charges a gentle 7.5 cents per dollar, on a quarter of the stake, and still expects around $9.38 an hour, because it deals 500 games in the same time. At the worst surveyed video paytables, the figure reaches $20 an hour. The format with a quarter of the edge can cost more than double per hour.

Three caveats, because this table is only as honest as its assumptions. First, the pace numbers are assumptions: live and lottery pace is set by the house, but video and online pace is set by you, and playing 100 games an hour instead of 500 cuts the video figure by 80%. Second, these are expected losses, long-run averages; any single hour can swing far above or below, and keno's rare big catches make the swings wide. Third, the online row leans entirely on an operator's own RTP claim, so treat it as a best case, not a measurement. Picking your format: pace is the price

There's no single right answer, because the formats sell different things.
