What is a bingo pattern?

A pattern is the shape you need to complete on your 5×5 card to win the round. Before every game, the host or the software displays the pattern, highlighting which squares count toward the win. Your job is to mark the numbers in those specific positions as they are called.

How does pattern complexity affect the math?

The more squares a pattern requires, the more numbers must be called before someone is likely to complete it. This relationship is not linear. Each additional required square becomes progressively harder to fill because the remaining uncalled numbers in the pool shrink while the chance that a specific needed number is drawn next stays roughly proportional to the remaining pool.

A few things stand out:

  • Single lines complete faster than four corners despite needing more squares, because there are 12 possible lines (5 horizontal, 5 vertical, 2 diagonal) and only one set of four corners. More ways to win means earlier winners on average.
  • The jump from 16 squares (picture frame) to 24 (blackout) adds only about 9 more calls on average, because by that point most of the pool has been called.

How does pattern choice affect prizes?
