Crypto Craps vs. Live Dealer
Crypto craps runs on a random number generator with instant rounds, while live-dealer craps streams a real table and shooter — same house edge math, different pacing and experience.
Online craps generally comes in two formats: RNG-based (often called "crypto craps" on crypto-friendly platforms) and live-dealer, where you're watching a real table streamed to your device. Both use the same rules and the same house edge numbers you've already learned in best bets, ranked. The differences are in pacing, trust mechanics, and how the roll itself is produced.
RNG-based crypto craps. A random number generator determines each roll, simulating dice digitally. Rounds resolve in seconds, there's no waiting for a live shooter, and you can typically play at any stake without a minimum group of players. Fairness depends on the RNG being properly certified and unbiased.
Live-dealer craps. A real dealer and shooter operate an actual table, streamed to you in real time. You place bets digitally, but the dice are physically thrown, so the pacing matches a real casino: waiting for chip placement, shooter rhythm, and dealer payouts. It offers a more social, human-paced experience.
Same math, different machine: crypto craps trades table atmosphere for speed, live dealer trades speed for a real, watchable dice throw.
Factor | Crypto (RNG) craps | Live-dealer craps |
|---|---|---|
Round speed | Seconds | Minutes, real table pace |
Outcome source | Certified RNG | Physical dice, streamed |
Fairness check | RNG certification / provably fair tools | Camera verification, dealer oversight |
Social feel | Minimal | Closer to a real casino |
Availability | 24/7, instant | Scheduled tables, may have waits |
Neither format inherently has better or worse house edge — that's determined by the bet you choose, not the delivery method. A pass line bet is ~1.41% house edge whether it's RNG-driven or dealt live, because the underlying dice probabilities are identical either way. Curious whether dice setting could tilt this in a physical game? It can't, and that lesson explains why in detail.
Some crypto platforms also offer "provably fair" tools, which let you independently verify that a specific round's outcome wasn't altered after you placed your bet. This is a cryptographic feature layered on top of RNG craps and isn't something live-dealer formats need, since you're watching a physical throw directly.
Choosing between the two comes down to preference: pick RNG craps if you want speed and don't need to see a physical roll, and pick live dealer if watching a real shooter matters to you. Either way, verify the platform is licensed and independently audited before you deposit. The final lesson digs into exactly what that verification looks like for RNG fairness.

Frequently asked questions
Is RNG craps rigged or less fair than live-dealer craps?
Not if you're playing at a licensed, audited operator. Both RNG and live-dealer craps use certified, tested systems, just different ones: RNG software is tested by independent labs for statistical randomness, while live-dealer setups rely on camera-monitored physical dice or automated shooting devices.
Can I win real money in free-play mode?
No. Free-play and demo mode use practice credits with no cash value, by design. To play for real winnings, you need to switch to RNG or live-dealer craps using real funds.
Why does live-dealer craps feel slower than RNG craps?
Because it's tied to a real-time physical or camera-monitored process rather than an instant computed result. A human dealer manages bets and payouts, and either a live shooter or an automated device has to complete an actual throw each round.
Do the odds change if I play live-dealer instead of RNG?
No. The house edge on every craps bet is fixed by the payout ratio of that bet, not by whether a computer, a human dealer, or an automated shooter is producing the result.
