Best Keno Numbers to Play: Myth vs Math
Every keno number has the same 25% chance per draw. The "1, 4, 23, 34, 72" lucky-numbers meme traces to no data at all, and 34 years of real lottery results confirm there are no hot numbers.
There are no best keno numbers to play. Every game draws 20 of 80 numbers, so any number you pick has a flat 20/80 = 25% chance of hitting on every single draw. Wizard of Odds puts it plainly: "it makes no difference which numbers you choose." The famous lucky-number lists trace back to no data whatsoever.
Search for the best keno numbers and one list dominates: 1, 4, 23, 34, and 72. Its most-cited source claims "research suggests" these are the most frequently drawn numbers — without naming the research, the dataset, the venue, or the time window. A few paragraphs later, the very same guide admits every number has an equal chance because the game runs on a random number generator. The myth's biggest carrier can't sustain its own claim within one page.
Is there a "hottest" keno number in real data?
The real data settles it. Washington's Lottery's Daily Keno frequency chart, covering draws since November 1992 through mid-2026 (roughly 12,300 draws), shows its all-time most-drawn number sitting only about 4% above the expected average, and its least-drawn number about 3.5% below. That's the size of wobble pure chance produces over a sample this large — not a signal. One affiliate site even reported a "hottest number" hitting 25.59% of the time, which, next to the 25% base rate, is a confession of uniformity dressed up as an edge.
Why do hot and cold number trackers feel official?
Hot-and-cold trackers, published by real state lotteries, make the myth look official. But a 100-game tracking window guarantees a "hot" list purely by chance: each number expects about 25 hits in 100 games, and some will always drift toward 30 while others drift toward 20. Shorten the window and the illusion gets dramatic; lengthen it toward 1,000+ draws and everything flattens back to 25%. The heat lives in the window you chose, not in the numbers.
Why does the myth persist despite the math?
Why does the belief persist? A landmark 1993 study of Maryland's own daily-numbers betting records found money bet on a number fell sharply right after that number won, then took months to recover — the textbook gambler's fallacy, captured in real betting slips. The same instinct that made bettors avoid "used up" winners decades ago is what makes today's hot/cold dashboards feel meaningful. The math backing all of this is the hypergeometric distribution: P(k) = C(20,k) × C(60,n-k) / C(80,n). Set n = 1 and it collapses to a flat 25%, for every number, every draw, with no exceptions. Certified random number generators are tested specifically for uniformity and bias, so a genuinely hot number on a licensed game would be a failed audit, not a strategy.
So pick your numbers however you like — birthdays, quick pick, the same slip for a decade — because this is the one keno decision with no wrong answer.
