Roulette Rules and Wheel Layout: Table Etiquette, Wheel Physics and Number Sequencing

What Happens Before the Ball Spins?

Most first-time players focus on which number to pick. Experienced players know the minutes before the spin matter just as much. Every roulette table follows a strict procedural sequence that protects both the house and the player.

Understanding these procedures turns confusion into confidence the first time you approach a live roulette table.

How Does the Dealer Procedure Work Step by Step?

A single round of roulette follows six stages. The croupier (dealer) manages all of them.

The window between stages 3 and 5 is typically 15–25 seconds in a land-based casino. Online live-dealer games compress this to 12–18 seconds with a visible countdown timer (Connoisseur & Partners, Inside the Casino, 2019; accessed August 2026).

Why can't you use regular casino chips?

Roulette uses colour chips — plain chips in distinct colours assigned to each player. When you sit down, you exchange cash or standard chips for a stack of your colour. The croupier marks the denomination on the rail.

This system exists because multiple players bet on overlapping numbers. Without colour coding, disputes over ownership would be constant. When you leave, you must exchange colour chips back — they have no value at any other game.

What Determines How the Ball Behaves on the Wheel?

Roulette looks like pure chance, and over large samples it is. But the physics of each spin follows deterministic principles — ball deceleration, scatter patterns, and pocket geometry all shape the outcome.

Ball deceleration

The ball is launched along the upper rim (backtrack) of the wheel bowl. Friction between the ball and the wooden track, combined with gravity, decelerates the ball over roughly 8–15 revolutions. Older ivory balls decelerated smoothly; modern Teflon or ivorine balls are lighter and produce more erratic bounce patterns, which is exactly why casinos switched — it makes visual tracking harder (Barnhart, R.T., Beating the Wheel, 1992; accessed August 2026).

Frets and pocket design

The dividers between pockets are called frets (or separators). Their height and material vary:

Casinos prefer low or scalloped frets because they increase scatter, reducing the effectiveness of any visual prediction method.

Ball deflectors

The diamond-shaped obstacles on the bowl's inner slope are ball deflectors (or pins). Most wheels have 8–16 of them arranged symmetrically. They disrupt the ball's trajectory as it descends from the backtrack, adding another layer of randomness to the final resting pocket.

Why Are Wheel Numbers Arranged the Way They Are?

If you read the numbers clockwise around a European wheel, they appear to be in random order: 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25 … But the sequence is carefully engineered to satisfy several balancing goals simultaneously.

  1. Red and black alternate (with zero breaking the pattern). No two consecutive pockets share the same colour.
  2. High (19–36) and low (1–18) numbers alternate as much as possible. On the European wheel, no more than two consecutive highs or lows appear in sequence.
  3. Odd and even numbers distribute evenly. Adjacent pockets almost never share the same parity.
  4. Neighbouring numbers on the wheel are far apart on the layout — and vice versa. Numbers 35 and 36 sit next to each other on the table but are nearly opposite on the wheel.

These rules ensure that any physically biased sector of the wheel doesn't produce a windfall on a simple outside bet. If all the high numbers clustered together, a slight wheel tilt would turn every high/low bet into a predictable outcome.

European vs American sequencing

The two wheels use completely different number sequences:

The European sequence achieves tighter mathematical balance because it has one fewer constraint to satisfy (one zero instead of two).

How Does Colour Assignment Work?

Colour assignment follows a fixed rule that predates modern casinos:

  • Numbers 1–10 and 19–28: odd numbers are red, even numbers are black.
  • Numbers 11–18 and 29–36: even numbers are red, odd numbers are black.

This creates an equal split — 18 red, 18 black — regardless of the zero pocket(s). The switch at 11 and 29 is what makes the pattern non-obvious to players seeing the table for the first time.

How Do Single-Zero and Double-Zero Table Layouts Differ?

The wheel difference (37 vs 38 pockets) gets plenty of attention. The table layout difference is less discussed but matters for bet placement.

In online versions, the difference is even more visible — French/European tables typically include a racetrack overlay that lets you click on neighbour bets directly, while American tables omit it entirely. What Should You Know About Table Etiquette?

Casinos enforce unwritten (and sometimes written) rules that trip up newcomers:

  • Don't hand money directly to the croupier. Place cash on the layout; the croupier will exchange it.
  • Don't touch chips after "no more bets." Reaching in after the call can get you warned or barred.
  • Don't stack your chips on someone else's bet. Place yours next to or on top — the colour system resolves ownership.
  • Tip the croupier by placing a small bet on their behalf (say, a straight-up alongside yours). This is customary in American casinos and appreciated in European ones.
  • Don't celebrate excessively while other players are losing on the same spin. The table is communal.
