French roulette applies the La Partage rule to even-money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even, High/Low), halving the house edge to 1.35%. American roulette's double-zero raises the edge to 5.26% on all bets, with the Basket bet carrying the worst edge at 7.89%. Expected loss = wager Γ— spins Γ— (house edge Γ· 100).

The short answer

The calculator above takes your roulette variant (European, American, or French), your bet type, your wager, and the number of spins β€” then returns the exact payout, win probability, house edge, and expected loss. No rounding, no approximation β€” the same math the casino uses.

How to use the calculator

  1. Pick your variant β€” European (single zero), American (double zero), or French (single zero with La Partage).
  2. Select the bet type β€” inside bets (Straight, Split, Street, Corner, Six Line) or outside bets (Dozen, Column, Red/Black, Odd/Even, High/Low).
  3. Enter your wager β€” the amount per spin.
  4. Set the number of spins β€” how long you plan to play. Default is 1; set it higher to see expected loss over a session.
  5. Read the results β€” payout if you win, net profit, win probability, expected loss, and the probability of hitting at least once in N spins.

How roulette payouts work

Roulette payouts are fixed ratios that never change. A straight-up bet always pays 35:1. A red/black bet always pays 1:1. What changes between variants is the number of slots on the wheel, which shifts the probability and the house edge.

European roulette has 37 slots (0 through 36). A straight-up bet covers 1 of 37 possible outcomes. The payout is 35:1, but fair odds would be 36:1 β€” that gap is the house edge.

American roulette adds a second zero (00), making 38 slots. The payouts stay the same, but every bet now covers one fewer slot proportionally. That doubles the edge from 2.70% to 5.26%.

French roulette uses the European wheel but adds La Partage: if you place an even-money bet and the ball lands on zero, you get half your stake back. This cuts the even-money house edge to 1.35% β€” the best odds on any roulette table.

The session math: expected loss over N spins

The calculator's most useful feature is the session projection. If you bet $10 per spin on red at a European table for 100 spins, your expected loss is:

$10 Γ— 100 Γ— 0.027 = $27

That doesn't mean you'll lose exactly $27. You might win $200 or lose $150 on any given session. But over thousands of sessions, the average loss converges on $27. The calculator does this math for any bet, any wager, any number of spins.

It also shows the probability of hitting at least once in N spins. A straight-up bet on European roulette has a 2.70% chance per spin, but over 25 spins, the probability of hitting at least once is 1 βˆ’ (1 βˆ’ 1/37)²⁡ = 49.5%. Almost a coin flip.

Why the variant matters more than the bet

New players agonise over which bet to place. The calculator reveals the real answer: it doesn't matter (within a variant). Every European bet carries 2.70%. Every American bet carries 5.26% (except Basket at 7.89%). The only decision that actually changes your expected cost is choosing the variant.

If you have access to European or French tables, play those. If only American is available, avoid the Basket bet. Beyond that, pick whichever bet you enjoy β€” the math is the same. Our article on why Martingale and other systems don't change the edge explains why no betting pattern can overcome this.

Red or black: why it's not 50/50

The most popular roulette bet β€” red or black β€” covers 18 of 37 (European) or 18 of 38 (American) numbers. That's 48.65% or 47.37%, not 50%. The zero (and double zero) belong to neither colour. Our deep dive on red or black odds covers why this small difference adds up over time.
