Baccarat Scoreboards, Roads, and the Card-Counting Myth

The Big Road and its derived roads track past baccarat hands vividly, and card counting works well in blackjack, but neither one predicts or beats an independent coup: baccarat's odds stay fixed no matter what you track.

Every baccarat table, live or online, displays a wall of red and blue marks charting who won each hand. Some players go further and try to track the shoe's card composition the way a blackjack counter would. Both habits are a genuine part of the game's culture, and both fail to predict the next coup for the same underlying reason: each hand in baccarat is an independent trial. What the scoreboard actually tracks

The scoreboard, or "road," records the outcome of every hand dealt from the current shoe. The Big Road is the master board: banker wins go in red, player wins in blue, each new streak starts a fresh column, and ties get a small diagonal line through the last mark. It's simply a running record of who won and how long each streak lasted.

Three more "derived" roads, Big Eye Boy, Small Road, and Cockroach Road, don't track wins at all. They track whether the Big Road itself is behaving consistently or chaotically, comparing the current column against earlier ones at increasing distances.

Why the roads can't predict the next coup

Each coup is dealt from a shuffled shoe under fixed drawing rules that neither you nor the dealer control. The cards have no memory of the previous hand. Banker wins roughly 45.86% of resolved hands regardless of what the roads show right before it. Studying past outcomes on a scoreboard to call the next one is, in the words of professional odds analysts, a waste of time, not a system.

Even a theoretically perfect count only moves the combined house edge to about 1.004%, against 1.06% for simply betting banker every hand. That gain is too small to capture by hand, which is why serious researchers concluded baccarat isn't practically countable without a computer.

Putting both myths together

Scoreboard-reading and card counting fail for related but distinct reasons. Scoreboards track results that already happened and carry no information about what happens next, because coups are independent. Card counting tracks the shoe's composition, which does shift slightly, but baccarat's fixed rules give you nowhere to act on that shift the way a blackjack player can. Both are entertaining parts of the game's tradition; neither buys you an edge.

The one number that actually matters is the fixed house edge by bet: roughly 1.06% for banker, 1.24% for player, and around 14.36% for tie, all unaffected by any road or count.
