Roulette Betting Systems and the House Edge

Martingale: double after every loss
Martingale is the best-known system. You pick an even-money bet like red or black, wager a fixed unit, and double your bet after every loss, dropping back to your starting unit after a win. The logic feels airtight: one win eventually recovers every prior loss plus a small profit.
The flaw is in the assumption, not the arithmetic. Each spin is still an independent event at 48.6% (European) or 47.4% (American) chance of winning an even-money bet. The wheel doesn't track your bet history, so doubling after a loss doesn't nudge the odds of the next spin even slightly. All three share the same flaw. They manage variance, the shape and bumpiness of your session, not expected value. Expected value is fixed entirely by the wheel and the payout table, and no staking pattern touches it. That's a direct consequence of independent trials in probability: outcomes with no memory of past results can't be corrected for by adjusting how much you bet on the next one.
Why they feel like they work
For a while, they usually do. Short losing streaks are common, and a single recovery win genuinely erases them under Martingale, which feels like proof the system is working. This is the gambler's fallacy wearing a spreadsheet.
